Introduction to Leadership eLearning Module
July, 2024
Overview:
As part of the launch of the Safe Places Leadership Academy, I was tasked with designing an eLearning module to introduce the program and its foundational leadership styles: Situational Leadership and Servant Leadership.
This module was intended to be the starting point for all participants, aligning with the organisation’s 70:20:10 learning model and laying the groundwork for leadership development across the company.
Project Breakdown:
-
To create an engaging and informative eLearning module that:
Introduces all staff to the Safe Places Leadership Academy
Clearly explains the organisation’s two core leadership styles
Supports self-paced foundational learning before live or practical development sessions
-
Articulate Rise – Core authoring tool for the eLearning module
Articulate Storyline – For adding interactive blocks and decision-based activities
Canva – For designing custom graphics and visual assets
MS Word – For drafting the written storyboard
-
Once the structure of the Leadership Academy was outlined, I was assigned the creation of this module by the OD Manager.
I partnered with the Leadership Specialist (SME) to co-develop a comprehensive written storyboard.
The storyboard was reviewed and revised with feedback from the OD Manager.
I collaborated with our Graphic Designer, who supported the creation of high-quality visuals and recorded interviews with key leaders to embed in the module.
I designed the course in Articulate Rise, incorporating Storyline activities to increase engagement and retention.
After completing the first draft, it was reviewed by both the SME and OD Manager for final feedback.
-
The final product was well-received by reviewers; however, the Leadership Academy launch was delayed due to internal uncertainty around the direction of leadership development. As a result, the module was not used as originally intended.
Instead, it was slightly repurposed and released as a post-learning resource for staff who had already participated in the 2024 Leadership Conference, which also focused on situational and servant leadership.
-
This project highlighted the importance of clarifying the purpose and timing of a training initiative upfront. While the module met design standards and received strong feedback, a lack of strategic clarity meant it didn’t achieve its full intended impact.
In the future, I would ask more pointed questions early in the planning process to help stakeholders define:
What success looks like
How the training fits within the broader learning strategy
When and how it will be delivered
