Mates to Manager eLearning Module

December, 2024

Overview:

Following an internal review of skill gaps across the management team at Safe Places, a clear and consistent challenge emerged.

Managers struggled to transition effectively from being a peer to stepping into a leadership role. I was assigned to design an eLearning course to support new and emerging leaders in developing the mindset, skills, and confidence needed to navigate this shift.

Project Breakdown:

  • Design and develop a digital learning module that supports managers in transitioning from peer to leader, with a focus on:

    • Building your own self awareness as a leader

    • Developing trust with your team

    • Setting healthy boundaries

    • Figma – for visual storyboarding and applying the standardised style guide

    • MS Word – for writing the full storyboard, including activity descriptions and content flow

    • Articulate Rise – to build and publish the eLearning module

    • Articulate Storyline – for custom interactive blocks within the course

    • Canva – for designing course graphics and visual assets

    1. Assigned the project and objective by the L&D lead, along with designated SMEs

    2. Conducted interviews with 3 subject matter experts to gather insights and content

    3. Developed a detailed written storyboard, outlining learning objectives, interactive elements, and activity descriptions

    4. Created a visual storyboard in Figma that followed the company’s standardised style guide

    5. Built the course in Articulate Rise, embedding custom interactive blocks using Storyline

    6. Final product reviewed and released company-wide to all managers

    7. Build a feedback form directly into the LMS. After completion, learners can rate and provide feedback so we can review the training package and update annually.

  • The course was successfully launched and distributed to all managers within the organisation. It has since been integrated into the leadership onboarding pathway for new leaders.

  • This project helped me understand the strengths and limitations of various eLearning tools. While Articulate Rise allowed for quick development and clean formatting, I realised it lacked the flexibility needed for complex, scenario-based interactions.

If I were to redevelop this course, I would opt to use Storyline as the primary platform to create more dynamic, decision-based learning experiences that better test a learner’s judgment in real-world situations.

  • Screenshot of a presentation slide titled 'The Transition from Mates to Manager,' showing a list of topics on the left and a quote in the center about being with a company longer and managing team concerns.

    Articulate Rise

The module was primarily built in Articulate Rise. To improve the design, I included icons and animations designed in Canva.

  • Document showing a training or instruction guide with lessons, titles, resources, and notes on leadership, boundaries, and leadership skills, organized in a table format.

    Written Storyboard

To organise content, I began this project by organising information within a written storyboard before moving to the design phase.

  • Screenshot of a digital interface showing a slide titled 'How can you build trust more effectively with your team?' with a section prompting to 'Complete the keep, stop, start exercise below.' The exercise has three columns labeled 'KEEP,' 'STOP,' and 'START,' each with a placeholder for user input. The left sidebar has a list of training or workshop modules, with some marked as completed.

    Articulate Storyline

I developed more comprehensive activities within Storyline for learners to be able to better apply their learning.
